Mi sono sempre opposto alle classifiche di mezzo mondo ritenendo quest'album il mio preferito degli Slayer. E' riconosciuta l'importanza per la storia del metal del successivo e devastante 'Reign in blood', ma 'Hell awaits' esce veramente dagli inferi. Oscuro, dai ritmi alti ma non velocissimi e dalla produzione cupa che ne favorisce la cattiveria. Non è Death Metal puro ma è assai superiore a tante uscite che passano per tali. Capolavoro.
