Darkthrone - Soulside journey (1991)

Non ho mai creduto che, secondo le parole di Fenriz e Nocturno Culto, 'Soulside journey' doveva essere un album Black Metal ma a causa della registrazione ne sia venuto fuori un disco Death Metal. Sono in possesso del vinile sin dalla sua pubblicazione (1991) e volendo essere pignoli di riconducibile al Bl Me c'è solo il logo 'Dark Throne' ed i caratteri nei titoli dei testi sul retro copertina. Trattasi di un Death Metal plumbeo, marcio, mai velocissimo ma pesante, simile al debut dei Paradise Lost. Con quest'ultimi oltre allo stile hanno anche in comune il disegnatore della copertina Duncan Aegrado. Prodotto con Tomas Skogsberg, la copertina è bella e all'avanguardia stando al target del periodo per il genere, La monumentale 'Cromlech' (che si stampa in testa per sempre) fa da apripista a 11 brani affamati di cattiveria. Belli i finali 'Nor the silent whispers', 'The watchtower' e 'Eon' che chiudono un'eccellente esordio che rimarrà un episodio unico nella carriera dei norvegesi.

Undead - False prophecies (2015)

Una delle migliori uscite dell'anno ci viene proposta dai misteriosi Undead. 'False prophecies' è un vero e proprio manifesto di DM vecchia scuola dove ,fin dai primi minuti, l'ascolto ci conduce a 'Leprosy' dei Death e 'Cursed' dei Morgoth. C'è una buona produzione, c'è il pathos ma anche la buona volontà di fare brani tutt'altro che sempliciotti, basta ascoltare 'Castrate humanity' o 'Emerging from the depths' per rendersene subito conto.

Morgoth - Ungod (2015)

Mi ero negativamente impensierito alla notizia del ritorno discografico dei tedeschi Morgoth a 19 anni dalla pubblicazione di 'Feel sorry for the fanatic', disco decisamente scialbo. Rientrare nel mercato dopo anni di inattività non sempre porta bene, basti ricordare gli ultimi Carcass e At The Gates per rendersi conto che il flop è cosa quasi certa. Tornando ai Morgoth, se mettiamo anche il disappunto per la sostituzione del vocalist Marc Grewe (tra le migliori voci del genere) con Karsten Jager (Disbelief) la probabilità di una delusione potrebbe starci. Fortunatamente mi sono bastati pochi ascolti (anzi uno solo) per ricredermi: 'Ungod' è un grande album di puro Death Metal, controllato, dal sound spettacolare!!, brani che confrontati con centinaia di pubblicazioni degli ultimi anni sono difficili da superare. Acquisto obbligato.

Sepultura - Arise (1991)

I Sepultura chiudono il periodo Death metal con questo monumentale 'Arise'. L'album è più cupo e meno thrasheggiante di 'Beneath the remains', solidissimo in tutti gli aspetti e consacra i brasiliani tra i migliori del genere. Il successivo 'Chaos AD' è l'inizio di un nuovo e decadente percorso musicale fatto di dischi inspiegabili che porterà i Sepultura ad un pseudo anonimato. Forse era meglio riciclarsi e campare di rendita.

Depravity - Silence of the centuries - Ep (1993)

Un voto alto a questo ep 'Silence of the centuries' dei finlandesi Depravity, cinque brani old school diretti e ben suonati in stile Grave. Dopo questa pubblicazione lo scioglimento, considerando la gestione dei brani si meritavano ben altro destino. La Dark Descent pubblica nel 2011 tutti i brani dei demo ed ep in un unica raccolta con lo stesso titolo di questo mini, vale la pena procurarsene una copia.

Nuclear Simphony - Lost in wonderland (1989)

Questa recensione Thrash Metal si distacca dal genere trattato in questo blog, per parlare di un album importante della scena italiana. La notizia della reunion dei Nuclear Simphony è molto bella quanto l'occasione di poterli vedere dal vivo al prossimo Metal Camp Sicily 2014 ad agosto. Questo debut pubblicato nel '89 lo considero tra gli album Thrash più belli di sempre: a determinarlo è l'ottima produzione di Harris Johns ai Musiclab Studios di Berlino che mette in risalto la quantità di riff, arpeggi, assoli, cambi di velocità che sono inclusi nei dieci brani trascinanti del disco. Insomma un album semplicemente da avere. Preso da questo allettante prossimo appuntamento estivo, ho riascoltato in questi giorni del buon Speed Thrash d'annata proponendo di seguito una lista di titoli belli e interessanti, del passato e recenti. Bentornati Nuclear Simphony.
